About the role#
Periodic Labs is building AI to simulate science and verify predictions. A key part of this mission is connecting materials discovery with device-relevant form factors. We are looking for a Nanofabrication Intern to help us validate materials through thin films, patterned structures, and process flows. You will support process development and experimental execution to build our internal fabrication capabilities. Your work will generate experimental data for our AI training pipeline.
What you'll do#
- Execute hands-on nanofabrication for silicon-based microelectronic, photonic, MEMS, or optical devices.
- Perform lithography workflows including spin coating, baking, mask alignment, exposure, development, lift-off, and optical inspection.
- Operate thin-film deposition and etch processes, such as sputtering, evaporation, PVD, ALD, wet etching, and RIE.
- Prepare substrates and manage process flows while tracking samples.
- Maintain detailed experimental records that meet data quality standards for AI training.
- Characterize samples using tools like profilometry, ellipsometry, SEM, or optical microscopy.
- Troubleshoot process issues and iterate on recipes with senior scientists and engineers.
- Follow safety and facility protocols in shared cleanroom environments.
What you'll need#
- Current pursuit or recent completion of a degree in electrical engineering, materials science, applied physics, mechanical engineering, chemistry, or a related field.
- Hands-on experience in a university cleanroom, semiconductor lab, photonics lab, or MEMS facility.
- Practical exposure to lithography, deposition, and etch processes.
- Ability to work independently in shared research facilities.
- Strong documentation habits and attention to detail when recording experimental results.
