About the role#
You will join the Optical Design Verification Test (ODVT) team within the Optical Networks Division. The team validates next-generation coherent optical transceivers and line systems to ensure they meet performance and reliability standards. This work involves the intersection of hardware, software, and photonics, with a focus on modernizing toolchains using AI-driven automation.
What you'll do#
- Implement and execute ODVT and Optical Integration (OIT) activities.
- Improve and extend Python-based test automation frameworks for validating optical hardware and system performance.
- Use AI tools like Cursor AI, GitHub Copilot, or LLM-based agents to speed up automation development, code reviews, and data analysis.
- Interface directly with optical test hardware, including optical spectrum analyzers, tunable lasers, variable optical attenuators, and bit-error-rate testers.
- Build and enhance workflow automation for test execution pipelines, data collection, and reporting.
- Investigate test failures and anomalies by performing root cause analysis on software and hardware layers.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong programming skills in Python with the ability to write clean, modular code.
- Hands-on experience with general lab instruments.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify root causes.
- Ability to work through complex technical challenges systematically.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in a team.
- Demonstrated persistence, initiative, and ownership.
- Experience with test automation frameworks like PyTest or Robot Framework.
- Familiarity with CI/CD tools, automated testing environments, and development tools like Git, Jira, or Confluence.
- Experience with AI-assisted coding tools.
- Exposure to hardware interfaces and communication protocols such as Serial, GPIB, or SCPI.
- Coursework or projects in signal processing, communications, optical networking, or photonic systems.
- Experience with Python data libraries including pandas, NumPy, and matplotlib.
- Basic understanding of optical networking technologies and transceiver validation.
Location & details#
- Location: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Duration: 8 to 12 months, starting January 4, 2027.
