About the role#
Nikon Research Corporation of America is looking for a graduate-level intern to join our team in Tucson for the Summer 2027 term. You will work alongside scientists and engineers to develop solutions for optical design, metrology, and digital manufacturing challenges. This is a full-time, on-site role based in a lab environment.
What you'll do#
- Work on projects that develop solutions to challenging technical problems.
- Complete individual tasks focused on specific project goals.
- Design, fabricate, or test mechanical parts and equipment.
- Develop new software for analysis.
- Prepare and deliver presentations on your completed work.
- Handle other duties as required.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing an MS or PhD in Optics.
- Good understanding of geometrical and physical optics.
- Experience using optical design and modeling software like FRED, ASAP, LightTools, CODEV, Zemax, or RSoft.
- Background in geometrical optical design and basic knowledge of linear systems theory including Fourier optics.
- Experience modeling optical systems using commercial and custom software.
- A background that includes designing and building experimental optical systems.
- Ability to work safely in a lab or cleanroom environment.
- Strong analytical skills, creativity, and the ability to propose solutions to difficult problems.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a small team.

- Location: Tucson, Arizona.
- Term: Summer 2027 (10 weeks).
- Modality: On-site.
- Employment: Full time, paid internship.
- Eligibility: Due to ITAR requirements, this position is open to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or foreign nationals with ITAR-defined eligibility.
