About the role#
This internship focuses on advancing sodium-based solid-state battery systems. These systems serve as a cost-effective alternative to lithium-based batteries with potential applications in space exploration. You will contribute to materials engineering research by synthesizing, characterizing, and testing battery components.
What you'll do#
- Prepare and characterize sodium-based solid-electrolyte and electrode materials.
- Process and fabricate solid-state battery electrodes and separator layers.
- Assemble and conduct electrochemical testing and analysis of battery cells.
- Operate specialized equipment including electron microscopy, spectroscopic instruments, inert gas gloveboxes, and battery testing tools.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
- Knowledge of chemistry and materials science.
- Experience in a wet chemistry laboratory.
- Ability to work well in a team environment.
- Self-motivation and attention to detail.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new techniques.
- Experience in electrochemistry, battery materials research, electron microscopy, spectroscopy, or materials synthesis is preferred.
- US citizenship is required.
Location & details#
- Location: Hampton, Virginia at the Langley Research Center.
- Term: Summer 2027 (June 7, 2027 to August 13, 2027).
