About the role#
NASA is working to reduce the cost and risk of using advanced composite materials in aerospace structures. This internship focuses on high-fidelity analysis methods that predict damage and failure in these materials. You will contribute to research that helps design and certify primary aircraft structures.
What you'll do#
- Conduct research on finite element-based predictions of damage propagation in polymer matrix composites.
- Build, run, and post-process finite element models to test different damage modeling approaches.
- Perform development, verification, or validation activities using the NASA CompDam material model.
- Develop new material modeling approaches to predict the strength and life of composite structures.
- Post-process experimental data to better understand damage mechanisms.
- Write scripts to automate manual tasks for processing experimental and analytical data.
What you'll need#
- You must be a United States citizen.
- Current enrollment as an undergraduate senior, Master's student, doctoral student, or post-doctoral researcher.
- Academic background in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Engineering Physics, or Materials Engineering.
Location & details#
- Location: Hampton, Virginia at Langley Research Center.
- Term: Summer 2027 (June 7, 2027 to August 13, 2027).
- Work modality: On-site.
- Employment type: Full-time.
- This is a paid internship.
