About the role#
This internship supports the modernization of launch vehicle acoustic environment prediction tools. You will work to bring legacy software up to current standards to ensure consistency and traceability. The project focuses on resolving discrepancies between two primary prediction tools, VAEPP and PAVE, while integrating modern datasets.
What you'll do#
- Perform a comparative assessment of VAEPP and PAVE prediction behavior to identify sources of divergence.
- Develop an updated MATLAB implementation to resolve identified discrepancies.
- Integrate new SMAT and SLS data products into the model.
- Transcribe outdated scripts into functional MATLAB code.
- Improve data import processes and metadata tracking.
- Validate prediction performance against SLS flight datasets.
- Propose GUI enhancements to improve the analyst workflow.
- Document discrepancies, updated algorithms, and verification results.
- Develop a prototype tool that may include water-suppression corrections, differentiation between hold-down and liftoff acoustics, and overpressure models.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as an undergraduate junior or senior.
- Pursuit of a degree in Aerospace Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
- US Citizenship.
Location & details#
- Location: Huntsville, Alabama.
- Term: Summer 2027 (June 7 to August 13).
- Modality: On-site, full-time.
