About the role#
Spaceflight presents unique challenges for biosensor devices. In microgravity, standard methods that rely on open containers or manual intervention do not work well. This project focuses on creating autonomous instrumentation to support bioassays and human health diagnostics. We use magnetic beads that move within a fluid carrier, allowing them to be localized over an electrochemical detector using magnetic fields. This role is based at the Ames Research Center.
What you'll do#
- Develop bioassays for use in microgravity environments.
- Design and manufacture fluidic systems.
- Integrate electronics into the sensor platform.
- Perform electrochemical analysis to test device performance.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as an undergraduate junior or senior, or as a graduate student (Master's or Doctoral), or status as a post-doctoral researcher.
- Academic background in Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or related fields.
- US citizenship.
Location & details#
- Location: Moffett Field, California.
- Work environment: Laboratory.
- Modality: On-site.
- Term: Summer 2027 (June 7, 2027, to August 13, 2027).
- This is an unpaid internship.
