About the role#
This internship focuses on the design and analysis of advanced subsonic, fixed-wing aircraft using cryogenic propulsion. You will work on concepts like blended-wing-body aircraft and truss-braced wings for long-range passenger and cargo missions. You will use rapid, multi-fidelity analysis tools to compare designs and assess mission performance. Projects are tailored to your background and may include analyzing passenger layouts, integrating cryogenic fuel tanks, and studying how these tanks affect aircraft stability and structural requirements.
What you'll do#
- Perform computational modeling to evaluate aircraft size, shape, range, payload, and performance.
- Develop new approaches for efficient design trade studies.
- Identify promising technologies for further exploration.
- Create technical documentation that defines roadmaps to mature new technologies.
- Collaborate across disciplines to solve interdisciplinary problems.
What you'll need#
- Knowledge of aircraft design principles and aerospace analysis.
- Experience with computational modeling and multi-fidelity analysis tools.
- Familiarity with structural analysis, stability evaluation, or mission performance assessment.
- Ability to develop and apply new analytical methods for emerging technologies.
- Proficiency in Python and familiarity with version control software like Git.
- Ability to pivot when technologies or approaches do not work.
- Effective communication and documentation skills.
- Pursuing a degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or Operations Research.
Location & details#
- Location: Hampton, Virginia (Langley Research Center).
- Term: Summer 2027 (June 7 to August 13).
- Modality: On-site.
