About the role#
The Earth Science Data Information Systems team at Langley Research Center is looking for a Data Science Intern to study how traffic congestion from construction affects air quality. You will work with nitrogen dioxide (NO2) data to understand how vehicular traffic impacts local environments. This project focuses on linking satellite observations with ground-based data to provide insights for future infrastructure planning.
What you'll do#
- Analyze geostationary satellite data, specifically from the TEMPO instrument.
- Integrate traffic datasets with satellite measurements and ground-based monitoring.
- Assess how traffic jams caused by construction influence NO2 concentrations.
- Quantify the contribution of traffic congestion to localized air quality degradation.
- Explore temporal patterns and potential health impacts on surrounding communities.
- Implement neural network techniques to analyze environmental data.
- Develop a Jupyter Notebook to integrate these various datasets.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a degree program for Environmental Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related field.
- A solid understanding of environmental science concepts regarding air quality.
- Strong programming skills in Python.
- Familiarity with AI and machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.
Location & details#
- Location: Hampton, Virginia.
- This is an on-site, full-time position.
- Term: Summer 2027 (June 7, 2027, to August 13, 2027).
- You must be a U.S. citizen to apply.
