About the role#
NASA Langley Research Center is looking for an intern to support the Materials Research Laboratory. This role focuses on characterizing the fracture behavior of fiber-reinforced composite materials. You will work with datasets generated from mechanical testing of specimens ranging from small coupons to structural panels. The goal is to improve the validation of progressive damage analysis models used in finite element simulations.
What you'll do#
- Operate servo-hydraulic test systems to conduct mechanical testing.
- Process and interpret experimental data, including load, displacement, and strain measurements.
- Develop automated Python scripts to reduce and analyze test data.
- Process Digital Image Correlation (DIC) data to study failure processes.
- Interpret ultrasound scans and X-ray computed tomography to identify delaminations and fiber damage.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as an undergraduate senior, master's student, doctoral student, or post-doctoral researcher.
- Academic background in Aerospace, Mechanical, Materials, or related engineering fields.
- Ability to work on-site in Hampton, Virginia.
