    About the role#

    As a NAMI HelpLine Information & Referral Specialist, you will support individuals navigating mental health challenges. This is an unpaid, remote internship requiring a 4-month commitment. You will serve at least 8 hours per week, consisting of two 4-hour shifts. This role is open to students currently enrolled in an academic program who are at least 20 years old and located in the United States.

    What you'll do#

    • Answer calls and texts from individuals seeking mental health resources and emotional support.
    • Provide person-centered and culturally considerate information using established referral tools.
    • Document all interactions accurately and efficiently.
    • Participate in one virtual shift-change meeting each week.
    • Complete a 21-hour independent online training program followed by a technology setup session.
    • Adhere to all NAMI HelpLine service program policies and procedures.

    What you'll need#

    • Current enrollment in an academic program.
    • Lived personal experience with mental health recovery (at least one year), caregiving experience for a loved one, or current enrollment in a related undergraduate or graduate program.
    • Ability to respond sensitively to individuals experiencing emotional distress.
    • Proficiency with cloud-based technologies.
    • A private workspace and a computer with a recent operating system (MacOS, Windows, or Linux).
    • A working headset or headphones and reliable high-speed internet.
    • Ability to pass a background check.

    Location & details#

    • This position is fully remote within the United States.
    • Interns must commit to a minimum of 8 hours per week for 4 months.
    • Shifts are available Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. ET.
