About the role#
Montclair State University is seeking a Vice President for Student Development and Campus Life to provide strategic and operational leadership for a broad portfolio of student-facing programs. Reporting to the President and serving as a member of the Executive Council, this individual will shape the student experience across two campuses. The role focuses on fostering a supportive environment that promotes student success, engagement, health, and well-being from enrollment through graduation.
What you'll do#
- Develop and advance a strategic vision for the Division of Student Development and Campus Life.
- Lead a comprehensive portfolio of programs, including student success, residential life, health and wellness, and campus safety.
- Collaborate with Academic Affairs, Enrollment Management, and other campus partners to integrate student experiences across the University.
- Manage divisional resources, including staff, budgets, and programs.
- Utilize data, assessment, and student perspectives to inform decision-making and improve services.
- Provide executive leadership during complex student matters, crises, and emerging issues.
- Address barriers to student success, such as food and housing insecurity.
- Serve as a visible advocate for the student experience while building relationships with students, families, faculty, and staff.
What you'll need#
- A Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, public administration, or a related field.
- At least ten years of progressively responsible experience in student affairs, including senior leadership roles.
- Experience leading a cohesive team and managing a broad portfolio within a complex higher education environment.
- Proven ability to build collaborative relationships across organizational areas.
- Strong communication skills to engage with diverse constituencies.
- Demonstrated success in developing strategic initiatives that enhance student outcomes.
- Experience handling complex safety or crisis-related matters.
- A Doctoral degree is preferred, as is experience with multiple campuses, organizational change, and a demonstrated commitment to inclusion.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, on-site position based in Montclair, New Jersey.
- The Vice President must reside in a university-designated residence or in close proximity to ensure a visible presence and rapid response for campus emergencies. University housing is provided.
