    About the role#

    We are looking for an applied AI Safety Researcher to join the Mila AI Safety Studio. This is a 3-month mandate focused on increasing the impact of machine learning research. You will work closely with researchers to design and implement safety guardrails within the public safety domain. This project involves dynamic benchmarking, red teaming simulations, and developing systems for harm detection and automatic evaluation. You will also coordinate with the Mila compute cluster team to manage infrastructure and resource usage. This role offers potential for publication in peer-reviewed conferences.

    What you'll do#

    • Write and document a scientific manuscript based on the work of the Mila Safety Studio.
    • Collaborate with product managers to define requirements for experiment design.
    • Select, evaluate, and integrate AI technologies alongside research staff.
    • Identify new research opportunities based on user feedback and existing prototypes.
    • Optimize processes related to model training, inference, and general research workflows.
    • Design and implement safety guardrails for public safety applications.
    • Conduct red teaming simulations and dynamic benchmarking.

    What you'll need#

    • AI research experience with multiple publications in major conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML, or ICLR.
    • Strong scientific curiosity regarding applied AI safety.
    • Ability to explain complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences.
    • Proficiency in collaborating within multidisciplinary teams.
    • Experience in agile software development and product management is preferred.
    • A PhD in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field is preferred.
    • Excellent proficiency in Python is preferred.
