About the role#
Lydian is seeking a Coatings Engineer/Scientist Co-op for a six-month term starting in Spring 2026. This role sits at the intersection of materials chemistry and process engineering. You will focus on developing and optimizing coating materials, including slurry formulation and monolith coatings, to support pilot-scale demonstrations. Your work will directly influence how our catalysts are manufactured at scale.
What you'll do#
- Develop slurry coatings using various powders, binders, rheology modifiers, and solvents.
- Characterize slurry properties and evaluate their impact on coating quality.
- Apply coatings to monolith substrates and test for loading, uniformity, adhesion, and thermal stability.
- Scale up promising formulations to coat large substrates and translate small-sample recipes into repeatable processes.
- Collaborate with partners to develop scalable manufacturing techniques.
- Use advanced characterization techniques to build a deeper understanding of materials and coatings.
- Build, upgrade, and maintain coating and materials test equipment.
- Document procedures, analyze data, and share findings with the team.
What you'll need#
- Current B.S. or M.S. student in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Ceramic Engineering, or a related field.
- A proactive, hands-on approach to lab work.
- Interest in high-temperature materials science.
- Undergraduate-level understanding of reaction kinetics, heat transfer, and mass transport.
- Experience documenting experimental procedures, collecting data, and performing statistical analysis.
- Strong focus on safety and risk assessment when handling powders, solvents, and high-temperature furnaces.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience in slurry formulation and coatings is preferred. Familiarity with heterogeneous catalysis is a plus.

- This is a paid, full-time, on-site role based in Boston, Massachusetts.
- The position requires a minimum commitment of six months.
