About the role#
The Physics and Chemistry of Materials Group (T-1) is seeking a post-bachelor student to support research in computational biology and AI-enabled medical countermeasure development. You will contribute to the evaluation of computational models for toxin-protein interactions by integrating sequence, structure, and experimental data. This position is full-time and based on-site in Los Alamos, New Mexico.
What you'll do#
- Curate, process, and analyze protein sequence and structural datasets.
- Apply AI/ML, protein language models, and structure-prediction methods to investigate molecular interactions and binding interfaces.
- Develop reproducible, end-to-end workflows that integrate sequence- and structure-based predictions.
- Evaluate model performance and compare computational predictions with structural and experimental evidence.
- Collaborate with computational and experimental researchers.
- Document methods and communicate results through technical reports and presentations.
What you'll need#
- A bachelor's degree (or degree expected to be awarded before the position begins) in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, bioinformatics, computational biology, data science, computer science, physics, engineering, or a related field.
- Knowledge of computational biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, or a related area.
- Understanding of protein structure, function, or molecular interactions.
- Experience with scientific programming, preferably Python.
- Familiarity with AI/ML workflows for biological applications.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary research team.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Desired: Experience with AlphaFold, ESM, PyMOL, Chimera, Git, Linux, high-performance computing, or protein-ligand interaction modeling.
- Desired: Laboratory experience in molecular biology, cell biology, or biochemistry, and an interest in connecting computational predictions with experimental validation.
Location & details#
