About the role#
We are looking for a co-op to join our Materials Science team. You will focus on the characterization of electrodeposited metal films. Your work involves developing measurement methods and ensuring results are repeatable. You will work alongside scientists and engineers in a lab designed for high-throughput, automated experimentation. Your protocols will directly influence how these measurements scale.
What you'll do#
- Develop sample preparation and measurement protocols for electrodeposited films, including four-point probe, hardness testing, and SEM/EBSD.
- Prepare samples for SEM and EBSD by mounting, polishing, and cleaning surfaces.
- Run measurements using four-point probe, laser confocal metrology, and hardness testing equipment.
- Analyze XRD data for phase ID, texture, peak shift, and crystallite size.
- Analyze EBSD data for grain size, orientation, and texture.
- Validate measurement repeatability and establish data quality criteria.
- Analyze and visualize characterization data while documenting methods and failure modes.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a bachelor's, master's, or PhD program in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Hands-on experience operating materials characterization instruments in a laboratory setting.
- Experience with hardness testing, such as micro- or nano-indentation.
- Experience with metallographic or SEM sample preparation.
- Experience analyzing XRD data.
- Working knowledge of thin films, metal microstructure, or surface metrology.
- Careful experimental technique and detailed record keeping.
- Availability for the full Spring co-op term, from January through May 2027.
- Master's or PhD candidates are preferred. Additional experience with Python for data analysis, EBSD data analysis, SEM/FIB, four-point probes, and automated laboratory workflows is a plus.
Location & details#
- Location: Cambridge, Massachusetts.
- Term: Winter 2027 (January through May).
- Modality: On-site.
- This is a paid, full-time position.
