About the role#
Lakeland Veterinary Hospital offers a clinical externship program for students currently enrolled in an accredited DVM program. This program provides practical experience in a small animal practice setting. You will work alongside our veterinary team to gain hands-on experience and meet the educational requirements of your college curriculum. Mentors are assigned to each student to provide instruction and evaluation throughout the rotation.
What you'll do#
Under the supervision of a mentor doctor, you will participate in daily patient care activities. Your responsibilities include:
- Gathering patient histories and performing physical examinations.
- Developing diagnostic and therapeutic plans for medical cases.
- Scrubbing in to surgery and assisting in surgical procedures.
- Providing wellness care and managing medical cases.
- Developing client communication skills.
- Producing accurate medical records, including SOAPs.
- Polishing technical skills and participating in daily practice tasks.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited DVM program.
- Professional liability insurance coverage.
- Familiarity with the Veterinary Practice Act regarding the scope of duties and required supervision.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Professional and ethical behavior at all times.

- Location: Baxter, Minnesota.
- Modality: On-site.
- Duration: Flexible, typically two to eight weeks.
- Schedule: Includes days, evenings, and weekends.
- Compensation: A stipend of $250 per week is provided.
