Lake Country Veterinary Care offers a flexible externship and preceptorship program designed to support the professional development of veterinary students. This program provides hands-on experience in a small animal practice, allowing students to transition from clinical preparation to practice-readiness. Externships typically last between two and eight weeks, with most students completing a two- or three-week rotation. Participants are assigned a mentor to guide their learning objectives and receive a written performance evaluation upon completion.
What you'll do#
Under the supervision of a mentor doctor, you will participate in all aspects of patient care, including:
- Gathering patient histories and performing physical examinations.
- Developing diagnostic and therapeutic plans.
- Assisting in the management of medical cases and providing wellness care.
- Scrubbing into surgeries.
- Developing client communication and technical skills.
- Producing accurate medical records, including SOAPs, within daily practice time limits.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited DVM program.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Proof of professional liability insurance (a certificate of coverage is required).
- Professional conduct and adherence to the Veterinary Practice Act and practice standards.

- Modality: On-site.

- Compensation: A stipend of $250 per week is provided.
