About the role#
Kunin designs, builds, and commissions metal recovery plants using proprietary ion-exchange media. We operate bench rigs and mini-pilots in Chattanooga, with plans for modular skid-built plants for industrial partners starting in 2027. You will join the engineering team for the summer on one of three tracks: electrical and instrumentation, mechanical, or chemical process engineering. By the end of the term, you will deliver a completed, documented design package or a commissioned sub-system that the team will carry into the next plant build.
What you'll do#
- Own a specific engineering deliverable related to your track, such as a control loop set, skid design package, or process design basis.
- Create and maintain engineering documentation, including P&IDs, instrument lists, 3D models, equipment data sheets, and calculations.
- Assist with the commissioning and operation of bench rigs and mini-pilots, including data acquisition and instrument calibration.
- Analyze pilot data and use those results to inform future designs.
- Coordinate with vendors regarding equipment and instrument specifications and quotes.
What you'll need#
- Current undergraduate or graduate student in electrical, mechanical, or chemical engineering, or a related field, graduating in 2027 or 2028.
- Proficiency in track-specific tools, such as PLC and HMI programming, electrical schematics, SolidWorks, FEA, Aspen, process simulation, or Excel-based balances.
- Hands-on experience in a lab or pilot environment, including wiring instruments, assembling piping, or running equipment.
- Ability to work in a demanding environment and document work carefully.
- Exposure to hydrometallurgy, chemical plants, or industrial automation is preferred.
Location & details#
- This is a paid, full-time internship located on-site in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
- The term is for Summer 2027, lasting approximately 12 weeks with a flexible start date.
- You may be required to work extended hours during critical project phases.
- Sponsorship is not available for this role.
- Strong performers will be considered for full-time positions upon graduation.
