About the role#
The Instructional Design Intern supports the Youth Education Programs at the International Rescue Committee in Elizabeth, New Jersey. This role assists the Youth Instructional Design Specialist with programming activities, including the Empower Tutoring and the Mini Newcomer Youth Summer Academy. You will help refugee and immigrant youth adapt to school environments and prepare for their future academic and career goals.
What you'll do#
- Organize assessment data to create staff training, educator toolkits, and curriculum materials.
- Assess and monitor the linguistic and social-emotional needs of students.
- Develop and administer English Language Proficiency assessments and manage data for reports.
- Create age-appropriate lesson plans and classroom activities for students.
- Maintain comprehensive case notes on a shared digital platform.
- Collaborate with teachers, volunteers, and other interns to support program delivery.
- Participate in staff development meetings, tutor support hours, and observation sessions.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing or have earned a bachelor's or master's degree in ESOL, social work, education, public health, or related fields.
- Experience working with children and youth in educational or social programs.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Experience with Microsoft Office and digital platforms such as Canva.
- Knowledge of lesson planning and curriculum design.
- Experience working with refugee or immigrant populations is highly desirable.
- Fluency in a second language, such as Spanish, Arabic, Dari, Pashto, Farsi, Kiswahili, or Haitian Creole, is preferred.

- Location: Elizabeth, New Jersey.
- Work modality: On-site.
- Commitment: 15 to 20 hours per week.
