About the role#
The ESOL Intern assists the Adult Education Specialist in planning and providing English language training classes for refugees and immigrants in Richmond. This role focuses on helping new arrivals build confidence in speaking, reading, and writing English to improve their resource accessibility and employment opportunities. This is an unpaid, full-time internship for Fall 2026.
What you'll do#
- Assist staff with the enrollment, coordination, and implementation of educational classes.
- Contact students to confirm their availability and help navigate barriers to education.
- Support teachers by preparing student materials and differentiating instruction for individuals or small groups.
- Communicate with local stakeholders to connect students to appropriate services.
- Coordinate with volunteers to ensure class coverage and provide childcare support when necessary.
- Collect data to track progress and support educational initiatives.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to organizational policies regarding client privacy.
What you'll need#
- Current undergraduate or graduate studies in education, social work, international relations, social sciences, or a related field.
- Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail.
- Ability to work with patience, flexibility, and understanding in a cross-cultural environment.
- Awareness of global backgrounds and a commitment to helping refugees adjust to life in the United States.
- Willingness to learn about the mission and local efforts of the IRC.
- Proficiency in more than one language is preferred but not required.
