About the role#
The Adult Education Intern will assist the Adult Education Specialist in the planning and implementation of English language training classes for refugees and immigrants served by the IRC in Richmond. This role focuses on helping new arrivals build confidence and skills in reading, writing, and speaking English to expand their employment and resource accessibility. The intern will also support community partnerships and digital literacy initiatives.
What you'll do#
- Assist staff with the enrollment, coordination, and implementation of classes.
- Contact students to confirm their availability to attend sessions.
- Navigate client barriers to education, including transportation and childcare needs.
- Differentiate and scaffold instruction for students individually or in small groups.
- Prepare student materials and coordinate with volunteers to ensure proper coverage for classes and childcare.
- Communicate with local stakeholders to connect students to appropriate educational services.
- Collect and interpret data to support educational initiatives and student success.
- Adhere to organizational policies regarding confidentiality and client privacy.
What you'll need#
- Current undergraduate or graduate level studies in education, social work, international relations, social sciences, or a related field.
- A background in education or experience teaching in formal or informal settings.
- Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail.
- Effective communication skills, particularly in a cross-global environment.
- Patience, flexibility, and a commitment to helping refugees adjust to life in the U.S.
- Proficiency in more than one language is preferred, specifically Dari, Pashto, Arabic, Spanish, or Kinyarwanda.
