About the role#
The Adult Education Intern assists the Adult Education Specialist in planning and implementing English language training classes for refugees and immigrants. This role focuses on helping new arrivals build the language skills necessary to access local resources and employment opportunities in Richmond. You will gain experience in classroom management, client services, and cross-cultural social work while supporting educational initiatives.
What you'll do#
- Assist staff with the enrollment, coordination, and implementation of classes.
- Contact students to confirm class availability.
- Help clients navigate barriers to education, such as transportation and childcare needs.
- Differentiate and scaffold instruction for students in individual or small-group settings.
- Communicate with local stakeholders to connect students to appropriate educational services.
- Prepare student materials and coordinate with volunteers to ensure proper classroom coverage.
- Collect and interpret data to support educational initiatives and track student success.
- Adhere to organizational policies regarding confidentiality, privacy, and respectful client engagement.
What you'll need#
- Current undergraduate or graduate studies in education, social work, international relations, social sciences, or a related field.
- Prior experience teaching in formal or informal settings.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Effective communication skills suitable for a cross-global environment.
- Patience, flexibility, and an interest in supporting refugees.
- Proficiency in more than one language is preferred, specifically Dari, Pashto, Arabic, Spanish, or Kinyarwanda.
