    About the role#

Huawei Canada is seeking a Researcher for a 12-month internship within the Human-Machine Interaction Lab. This team develops multimodal interactions, including voice, touch, vision, and gesture, for smartphones, wearables, and other devices. You will work alongside researchers and designers to bridge the gap between AI concepts and functional, real-world prototypes.

    What you'll do#

    • Build prototypes that demonstrate multimodal interactions on actual devices.
    • Integrate AI and ML models into applications and demos.
    • Implement logic that combines information across multiple modalities, such as voice with gesture or visual context with language.
    • Translate interaction concepts into testable prototypes and refine them based on experimental results.
    • Use frameworks like PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX for model inference, fine-tuning, and evaluation.
    • Analyze trade-offs between on-device and cloud-based AI, specifically regarding latency, privacy, and resource usage.
    • Write clean, maintainable code and debug issues independently.
    • Identify ways to apply emerging technologies in foundation models and intelligent agents to new device experiences.

    What you'll need#

    • Currently pursuing a Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, AI, Machine Learning, HCI, or a related field.
    • Strong programming skills in Python, plus proficiency in at least one of C++, Java, C#, Kotlin, or Swift.
    • Solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, and the basic ML workflow.
    • Hands-on experience with at least one ML framework.
    • Exposure to areas like speech, computer vision, NLP, or generative AI.
    • Ability to independently build technical projects and troubleshoot implementation issues.
    • Experience working in environments like Linux, Windows, or Android.
    • Proficiency with command-line utilities, version control, and dependency management.
    • Strong communication and collaboration skills.

    Location & details#

    • This is a full-time, paid internship based on-site in Markham, Ontario.
    • The role follows a rolling intake process.
    • Annual compensation ranges from $58,000 to $104,000 based on education and experience.
