About the role#
Huawei Canada is seeking an Intern Researcher to join the Computing Data Application Acceleration Lab. This role involves working on full-stack innovations, including software-hardware co-design and data efficiency at the storage and runtime layers. You will contribute to the development of next-generation GPU architecture and help improve algorithm performance and training efficiency.
What you'll do#
- Support the development and optimization of foundation models, including LLM, Code, and Multimodal models.
- Assist with model architecture improvements, experimentation, and post-training optimization techniques.
- Conduct research on continual learning and hardware-aware methods to improve model efficiency.
- Help build and optimize distributed training and inference systems by applying parallelization strategies like model, tensor, and data parallelism.
- Support operator-level and computational graph optimizations.
- Perform benchmarking and analysis to evaluate system performance.
- Work with hardware architects and algorithm engineers to support experiments and prototyping.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a PhD or Master Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Exposure to AI architectures such as transformers or mixture-of-experts.
- Exposure to computer architecture, including memory systems or interconnects.
- Familiarity with deep learning frameworks like PyTorch, vLLM, or SGLang.
- Understanding of large-scale model training and distributed training fundamentals.
- Demonstrated interest in research through academic projects, publications, or previous internships.
- Hands-on experience with GPUs or AI accelerators such as NPU or TPU is preferred.
- Contributions to academic or open-source ML projects are a plus.

- Work Arrangement: On-site.
- Term: 6-12 months.
- Compensation: Annual target compensation ranges from $58,000 to $104,000 based on education and experience.
