The Chaplain Intern participates in the accredited Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program at Houston Methodist. This role involves a combination of classroom education and individual supervised learning. Under the guidance of a Certified Educator and a mentor, interns provide spiritual, religious, and emotional support to patients, families, employees, and physicians.
What you'll do#
- Provide spiritual care support to patients, family members, employees, and physicians.
- Collaborate with the interprofessional patient care team, including participating in rounds and discharge planning.
- Assist in the initial screening and assessment of patients and contribute to the development of patient care plans.
- Provide crisis intervention for patients, visitors, and employees.
- Accurately and thoroughly document all patient visits and spiritual care services in patient records.
- Prepare reports and summaries to meet CPE program requirements.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited college or university.
- A bachelor’s degree or graduate-level theological degree from an accredited school is preferred.
- At least one year of membership in a faith or belief group.
- Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers.
- Proficiency in English, including speaking, reading, and writing.
- Basic computer skills to maintain patient documentation.
- Demonstrated skills and competencies necessary to function in a learning environment.
- Majors in Philosophy, Psychology, Nursing, or Public Health are relevant to this role.

- Term: Summer 2027.
- Modality: On-site.
- This is a non-paid, part-time internship.
- On-call availability may be required during emergencies.
