About the role#
Haw Creek Animal Hospital offers a DVM externship and preceptorship program for students enrolled in an accredited veterinary program. This program provides practical experience in a small animal practice to help you prepare for your career after graduation. You will work alongside our veterinary team under the supervision of a mentor doctor to meet your specific learning goals or those defined by your college. At the end of your rotation, your mentor will provide a written evaluation of your performance.
What you'll do#
Externs participate in daily patient care activities and gain experience with a typical small animal caseload. Your responsibilities include:
- Gathering patient histories
- Performing physical examinations
- Developing diagnostic and therapeutic plans
- Scrubbing in to surgery
- Assisting in the management of medical cases
- Providing wellness care
- Developing client communication skills
- Producing medical records including SOAPs
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited DVM program
- Authorization to work in the United States
- Professional liability insurance (a certificate of coverage must be submitted with your application)
- Professional conduct and adherence to the Veterinary Practice Act
