The Alberta Human Rights Commission is hiring two summer law students to support the Director and legal counsel. This temporary, full-time position offers the opportunity to gain practical experience in administrative law and human rights within a government setting. Successful candidates will contribute to the Commission’s mandate of fostering equality and reducing discrimination through tribunal support and legal analysis.
What you'll do#
- Assist the Director and legal counsels with the preparation of draft decisions.
- Conduct legal research and draft formal legal opinions.
- Support the development and drafting of legal briefs.
- Attend and observe tribunal dispute resolution meetings and hearings.
- Engage with diverse communities and stakeholders.
- Apply legislation to unique scenarios and assist with administrative investigations or mediations.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited Law School.
- Demonstrated interest in human rights, administrative, civil liberties, constitutional, or labor and employment law.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Proven experience in legal research and writing.
- Technological proficiency, including experience with AI applications.
- Experience working with diverse communities, including marginalized groups such as Indigenous people, racialized communities, LGBTQ2SI+ individuals, and people with disabilities.
- Ability to work full-time from May 1, 2026, to August 29, 2026.
Location & details#
- Locations: Edmonton, AB and Calgary, AB.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Term: Summer 2026 (4 months).
- Hours: 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
- Compensation: Paid position at $31.68 per hour.
- Note: Final candidates may be required to undergo security screening.
