About the role#
General Motors is looking for a research intern to join the Energy and Propulsion Systems Research organization for the Summer 2027 term. You will support advanced electrification research by working on motor topologies, control methods, and AI-enabled engineering tools for hybrid and battery-electric vehicles. This role involves a mix of simulation, modeling, and hands-on laboratory experimentation.
What you'll do#
- Investigate electric-machine topologies, including rare-earth-free synchronous reluctance, induction, and switched reluctance machines.
- Develop and improve control strategies for electric drive systems.
- Apply artificial intelligence and machine learning to machine design, diagnostics, and performance optimization.
- Support simulation, modeling, and concept development for vehicle propulsion systems.
- Participate in drive-system testing and validate proof-of-concept hardware in the laboratory.
- Contribute to power-electronics and circuit-design projects.
- Analyze technical results and document findings through reports and presentations.
- Collaborate with researchers, engineers, and laboratory staff while following safety and data-management practices.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited MS or PhD program in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, or a related field.
- Demonstrated interest in electric machines, power electronics, or vehicle electrification.
- Experience with simulation tools like MATLAB/Simulink or finite-element analysis software.
- Programming skills in Python, C/C++, or MATLAB.
- Hands-on experience with laboratory instrumentation, motor testing, or power-electronics hardware.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and contribute to a collaborative team.
Location & details#
- Location: Warren, Michigan.
- Work Modality: Hybrid, with a minimum of three days per week onsite.
