About the role#
As a 2027 Summer Intern on the Energy and Propulsion Systems Architecture team, you will work with researchers and engineers to evaluate how energy storage and propulsion systems function at the vehicle level. This role involves architecture studies, simulation, and laboratory testing to inform the design of future electrified propulsion systems. You will gain exposure to battery cells, modules, packs, electric propulsion components, power electronics, controls, and thermal systems while applying systems thinking to turn data into technical insights.
What you'll do#
- Support architecture studies, including the evaluation of battery, electric machine, drive unit, power electronics, controls, and thermal-system interactions.
- Develop, run, and interpret vehicle-level propulsion and energy simulations across various operating conditions.
- Analyze energy consumption, performance, power capability, and state-of-charge behavior to identify architecture tradeoffs.
- Assist with battery-pack testing by preparing test activities, configuring equipment, collecting data, and maintaining records.
- Conduct laboratory work related to battery characterization, pack performance, and durability while following safety practices.
- Compare experimental results with model predictions to improve model assumptions and analysis methods.
- Clean, process, and visualize test data, summarizing results through plots, tables, and technical explanations.
- Create or update system block diagrams, interface descriptions, requirements documentation, and technical presentations.
- Collaborate with the team to define research questions, document assumptions, and review findings.
- Present technical findings in team discussions and incorporate feedback into follow-on analyses.
What you'll need#
- Pursuit of an advanced degree (MS or PhD) in mechanical, electrical, chemical, aerospace, systems, or automotive engineering, or materials science.
- Ability to work full-time (40 hours per week) during the summer months.
- Willingness to work in a laboratory and engineering test environment.
- Coursework or project experience in battery systems, electrochemistry, energy storage, electric propulsion, power electronics, controls, thermal systems, or vehicle dynamics.
- Experience with modeling, simulation, or data analysis using MATLAB/Simulink, Python, or Excel.
- Experience processing time-series data and communicating results through reports or presentations.
- Laboratory or instrumentation experience, including knowledge of experimental design and measurement quality.
- Ability to organize technical work, manage multiple priorities, and work within cross-functional teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, curiosity, and a willingness to learn from experiments.
Location & details#
- Location: Warren, Michigan.
- Work Modality: Hybrid (expected to report to the office at least three times per week).
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Employment Type: Full-time, paid internship.
- Note: This role does not provide immigration-related sponsorship.
