About the role#
This externship program provides veterinary students with practical experience in a small animal practice. We work with you to meet your specific learning goals or the objectives defined by your college program. You will be assigned a mentor doctor who provides instruction and evaluates your performance at the end of the rotation. The program is flexible and typically lasts two to three weeks, though it can range from two to eight weeks depending on your curriculum. Your schedule will include days, evenings, and weekends.
What you'll do#
Under the supervision of your mentor, you will participate in all aspects of patient care. Your daily responsibilities include:
- Gathering histories and performing physical examinations.
- Developing diagnostic and therapeutic plans.
- Scrubbing in to surgery and assisting in the management of medical cases.
- Providing wellness care to patients.
- Developing client communication skills.
- Polishing technical skills.
- Producing medical records, including SOAPs.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited DVM program.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Proof of professional liability insurance, such as AVMA PLIT.
- A professional demeanor and adherence to the practice standards outlined in our employee handbook.
