About the role#
E.L. Haynes Public Charter School is looking for an Algebra Bar Tutor to support 9th grade students. This role focuses on small group instruction to help students master core algebra concepts and build effective study habits. You will work closely with a Math Coach to prepare lessons and track student progress.
What you'll do#
- Lead recurring small group sessions for 9th graders on specific algebra topics.
- Review and internalize lesson plans with the Math Coach before instruction.
- Build positive relationships with students while keeping them focused on their learning goals.
- Help students develop the habits and skills needed to succeed in their math coursework.
- Score and record exit assessments after every session.
- Review student data regularly with the Math Coach to monitor performance.
What you'll need#
- Comfort with high school algebra, specifically solving multi-step linear equations, writing linear expressions, and understanding lines as collections of solutions.
- Ability to graph lines, interpret slope and y-intercepts, use function notation, and factor basic quadratic expressions.
- Confidence in facilitating small group instruction, ideally with previous tutoring experience.
- Skill in building strong relationships with diverse families and students.
- Strong time and task management abilities.
- Proficiency with Google Suite and online learning tools.
- Spanish language skills are a plus.
- A belief that positive academic mindsets help students persist and improve their performance.
