About the role#
Dublin Veterinary Hospital offers externship and preceptorship opportunities for DVM students. This program provides practical experience in a small animal practice, including exposure to exotic animals. You will work alongside our veterinary team to gain hands-on experience and prepare for clinical practice. The program is flexible, with rotations typically lasting two to three weeks, though they can range from two to eight weeks based on your curriculum. Your schedule will include days, evenings, and weekends.
What you'll do#
Under the supervision of a mentor doctor, you will participate in all aspects of patient care. Your responsibilities include:
- Gathering patient histories and performing physical examinations.
- Developing diagnostic and therapeutic plans.
- Scrubbing in to surgery and assisting in the management of medical cases.
- Providing wellness care.
- Developing client communication skills.
- Producing medical records (SOAPs) within the time limits of daily practice.
- Participating in patient care activities under supervision.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited DVM program.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Current professional liability insurance (AVMA PLIT).
- Familiarity with the Veterinary Practice Act regarding the scope of duties and required supervision.
- A professional approach to dress, behavior, and team expectations.
