About the role#
Dogwood Trails Animal Hospital offers a flexible externship program for veterinary students. This program provides hands-on experience in a small animal practice to help you prepare for your career after graduation. You will work alongside our veterinary team to practice clinical skills under supervision. Placements range from two to eight weeks, though most students choose a two or three-week rotation. You will work a schedule that includes days, evenings, and weekends.
What you'll do#
- Experience the typical caseload of a small animal practice.
- Gather patient histories and conduct physical examinations.
- Create diagnostic and therapeutic plans.
- Assist in the management of medical cases and provide wellness care.
- Scrub in to surgery and refine your technical skills.
- Develop client communication skills.
- Produce accurate medical records and SOAP notes.
- Work with a mentor to meet your specific learning objectives.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited DVM program.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Proof of professional liability insurance.
- A professional demeanor and adherence to our practice standards.
