About the role#
CSM Group is looking for a Preconstruction Project Intern to join our team in Kalamazoo. This role offers hands-on experience in the preconstruction process, including estimating, budgeting, scheduling, and project planning. You will work alongside experienced estimators and project professionals to contribute to project pursuits and gain a foundation for a career in construction.
What you'll do#
- Assist with quantity takeoffs using plans, specifications, and digital estimating tools.
- Support the preparation of conceptual, schematic, and detailed construction estimates.
- Gather pricing information from subcontractors, suppliers, and vendors.
- Participate in bid analysis, cost comparison exercises, and value engineering evaluations.
- Review drawings and project documents for completeness and constructability.
- Support the development of project budgets, cost models, and preliminary project schedules.
- Assist with project phasing, site logistics, and sequencing reviews.
- Identify potential risks and opportunities during project planning.
- Prepare client presentations, proposals, and project pursuit materials.
- Collaborate with estimators, project managers, architects, engineers, and trade partners.
- Conduct market research on construction materials, labor trends, and industry best practices.
- Support process improvement initiatives and data analysis related to project costs.
What you'll need#
- Current pursuit of a Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Engineering Technology, Building Science, or a related field.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Preferred: Prior internship, co-op, or construction coursework.
- Preferred: Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
- Preferred: Familiarity with estimating software such as Bluebeam, On-Screen Takeoff, or Sage Estimating.
- Preferred: Knowledge of scheduling tools like Microsoft Project or Primavera P6.
- Preferred: Interest in commercial, industrial, healthcare, education, or advanced manufacturing projects.
