About the role#
As a Machine Learning Intern, you will work on software and algorithms designed to solve real-world customer problems. You will handle data, build algorithms, evaluate results, and write production code for active systems. You may also present your findings to high-level customers in the Department of War and the broader industry.
What you'll do#
- Develop and implement machine learning algorithms.

- Collaborate with an advisor or project lead to meet specific goals.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. program in Computer Science, Mathematics, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- Expertise in Python, including NumPy, pandas, and PyTorch.
- Proficiency with git.
- Deep understanding of machine learning fundamentals like gradient descent, cross-validation, ROC curves, and confusion matrices.
- Knowledge of classical machine learning methods such as support-vector-machines and logistic regression.
- Familiarity with computer vision algorithms like ResNet, ResNext, YOLO, CenterNet, and image segmentation.
- Knowledge of modern techniques including vision image transformers and vision language models.
- Deep knowledge of the state-of-the-art in at least one area: computer vision, natural language processing, classical machine learning, or Bayesian models.
- Excellent technical communication skills.
- US citizenship.
- Previous experience with Department of War customers is a plus.
Location & details#
- This is a paid, full-time internship for Summer 2027.
- The position is located in Durham, North Carolina.
- You will work in a hybrid capacity, with at least 3 days per week required in the office.
