Summer Student - Civil/Structural/Mechanical Engineer

About the role#

Compass Minerals is seeking a Summer Student for the Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering team at the Goderich Salt Mine. This role supports the Engineering and Capital Manager and involves working within a team to address production challenges and capital projects. This is a full-time, on-site position located 1,800 feet underground.

What you'll do#

• Assist in completing engineering work orders and capital projects.
• Conduct field inspections, collect data, and document existing conditions.
• Create or modify technical drawings using AutoCAD.
• Perform mechanical or structural calculations and prepare preliminary designs and cost estimates.
• Analyze cost-to-benefit ratios for capital expenditures and justify funding requests.
• Collaborate with Operations to troubleshoot material handling issues and resolve production bottlenecks.
• Assist with administrative tasks, including digital drawing filing and preparing risk assessments.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in an accredited Civil, Mechanical, or Environmental Engineering program.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to explain technical reasoning.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• High attention to detail and commitment to maintaining departmental data standards.
• A self-starter attitude with the ability to work effectively within a team.

Location & details#

• Location: Goderich, Ontario, Canada.
• Term: Summer 2026.
• Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8-hour day shifts; overtime may be required to support 24/7 operations.
• Work environment: This position requires working underground.
