Cohere is seeking Research Interns for the Fall 2026 and Winter 2027 terms. This full-time position offers the opportunity to collaborate with researchers on designing and implementing novel ideas, with the goal of shipping state-of-the-art models to production. Interns will work across various research areas, including base model training, retrieval augmented generation, data and evaluation, safety, and finetuning.
What you'll do#
- Conduct machine learning research, including building and training large language models.
- Focus on projects that expand the frontier of knowledge in language modeling, evaluation, multimodal models, and optimization.
- Disseminate research results through the production of publications, datasets, and code.
- Contribute to research initiatives that have practical applications in product development.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a PhD in Machine Learning, NLP, or a related discipline.
- Experience using large-scale distributed training strategies, data annotation and evaluation pipelines, or implementing state-of-the-art ML models.
- Knowledge of ML frameworks such as JAX, PyTorch, and TensorFlow.
- Previous experience building systems based on machine learning and deep learning techniques.
- Familiarity with autoregressive sequence models, such as Transformers, and proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C, or C++.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to convey complex research findings clearly.
- Ability to maintain work authorization in the country of employment throughout the internship.

- This is a remote, full-time, paid internship.
- Available locations include Toronto, Ontario; San Francisco, California; and Montreal, Quebec.
