About the role#
As the Sara D. Roosevelt Park Community Fellow, you will work with Catalyst staff and community leaders to support efforts in building safe, positive, and engaging park programs. This position focuses on fostering community culture and collaboration in Sara D. Roosevelt Park, where complex social issues challenge park leadership. You will work as part of a team to support the Catalyst Director and other staff members.
What you'll do#
- Conduct onsite outreach, flyering, and survey distribution to encourage community involvement.
- Promote park group events and Catalyst initiatives through phone calls, emails, and community engagement.
- Act as a visible presence in the park, serving as a liaison between community partners, NYC Parks, and City Parks Foundation.
- Provide day-of event support, including managing sign-ins, setting up equipment, and handling event logistics.
- Attend community events to connect residents with park programs and services.
- Document events through photos, video, and surveys.
- Research best practices from other cities to find models for community revitalization in public spaces.
- Synthesize findings to make recommendations for initiatives within the park.
- Conduct assessments to measure community impact and track engagement metrics.
- Maintain records and data in the team database.
What you'll need#
- Familiarity with community organizing practices and experience with outreach, event promotion, and engagement.
- Ability to handle strategic consensus building around challenging social issues.
- Skill in researching, synthesizing, and recommending effective park practices.
- Capacity to take direction from team members and community leaders.
- Excellent listening and communication skills with the ability to work with diverse constituencies.
- Flexibility to work significant hours during evenings and weekends, alongside regular business hours.
- Resourceful and creative approach to work.
- Ability to represent NYC government programs and policies effectively.
- Physical ability to lift up to 40lbs and participate in manual tasks like event setup and park beautification.
- A driver’s license is strongly preferred.
- Bi or multilingual skills are strongly preferred.
