The Office of Park Planning and Design (OPPD) within the City of Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking a design intern. This role supports the citywide park system, facility planning, land acquisition, and the management of capital improvement projects. Interns are integrated into project teams, working on tasks ranging from research and data collection to design, drafting, and rendering.
What you'll do#
- Assist in the completion of design and planning projects.
- Collaborate with designers and project managers on project outreach and community engagement efforts.
- Conduct inventory, assessment, and analysis of existing parks and associated facilities.
- Contribute to the planning, scoping, and budgeting of design concepts.
- Draft and render design concepts using industry-standard software.
- Research and collect data and metrics related to park projects.
- Participate in design discussions, idea generation, and team meetings.
- Represent the department when interacting with colleagues, partners, community members, consultants, and contractors.
What you'll need#
- A Bachelor’s Degree in City Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Engineering, or Construction Management. Candidates currently pursuing a master’s degree in a related field are preferred.
- Proficiency in productivity software (Microsoft Office, Google Workspace) and familiarity with project management tools such as Procore, Bluebeam, and Monday.
- Proficiency in drafting and rendering software, including Adobe Creative Suite, ArcGIS, AutoCAD, Lumion, and 3D modeling tools like Rhino or SketchUp.
- Ability to multitask, manage time effectively, and work collaboratively with diverse teams.
- Strong written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Must submit a cover letter stating career goals and describing your relationship with public parks.
- Ability to pass required background checks for criminal and child protective findings, as well as a drug screening.
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including driving and walking park trails with varying topography and vegetation.

- Location: Atlanta, Georgia.
- Modality: On-site.
- Term: Summer 2026 (minimum 3 to 12 months).
- Employment type: Full-time, paid internship.
