About the role#
This 10-week summer internship offers pharmacy students a structured, hands-on experience in inpatient clinical pharmacy practice. You will work 40 hours per week alongside clinical pharmacists to participate in patient-care activities, medication-use initiatives, and professional development. The program focuses on building clinical reasoning, evidence-based medicine, and communication skills to support your future success in advanced pharmacy rotations and residency pursuits.
What you'll do#
- Work up assigned patients by reviewing diagnoses, medication therapy, laboratory results, and microbiologic data.
- Assess medication regimens for potential problems like drug interactions or renal dose adjustments.
- Obtain medication histories and participate in medication reconciliation.
- Develop therapeutic monitoring skills and clinical knowledge of disease states.
- Apply primary literature to answer patient-care and medication-related questions.
- Participate in or observe interdisciplinary patient-care rounds and clinical discussions.
- Gain exposure to both clinical and operational aspects of inpatient pharmacy practice.
- Complete a departmental project, such as a medication-use evaluation or a quality-improvement initiative.
- Develop and deliver patient cases, journal clubs, or a final project presentation.
- Participate in mentorship and professional development activities.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in the second professional year or later of an ACPE-accredited Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program.
- A strong interest in hospital and clinical pharmacy practice.
- Demonstrated professionalism, initiative, and the ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment.
- Interest in exploring advanced pharmacy practice and postgraduate training.
- Previous hospital pharmacy experience is preferred.
