About the role#
This visiting scholar appointment in the Department of Neurology offers an educational experience focused on medical and scientific communication. Under the mentorship of Dr. Alexis Simpkins, you will support projects that translate complex clinical and research knowledge into clear materials for both professional and patient audiences. This role involves a one-year curriculum covering publication ethics, health literacy, and evidence synthesis while working with multidisciplinary teams.
What you'll do#
- Support medical and scientific writing projects, including literature synthesis and manuscript development for original research and case reports.
- Prepare abstracts, presentations, and reference lists while managing documents for journal submission.
- Create patient-facing resources such as education handouts, after-visit materials, and care-navigation guides.
- Develop website or portal content that explains stroke prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.
- Review patient tools for clarity, readability, and usability, incorporating feedback from clinical and research stakeholders.
- Present completed writing products and recommendations to the department.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a master's student in communication, writing, medical writing, health communication, public health, health administration, or a related program, or current status as a medical student.
- Must be 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or GED.
- Must reside in the greater Los Angeles area or surrounding cities for the duration of the appointment.
- Visitors must receive funding from an eligible sponsoring institution.
- Strong written communication skills and a demonstrated interest in medical or scientific writing.
- Basic knowledge of literature review, evidence synthesis, or research methods.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Adobe, reference-management software, or content-management systems is an asset.
- Experience with readability assessment, qualitative feedback, survey tools, or data visualization is considered a plus.
