About the role#
As a Student Fitness Instructor at the Physical Education and Aquatics Center, you will lead group exercise classes and instructional sessions. You will work under the supervision of the Assistant Director for Recreational Sports Programs and Facility Operations. This is a part-time position based at the Cal Poly Solano Campus in Vallejo, California, requiring availability for the Fall 2026 term.
What you'll do#
- Lead exercise classes and develop individual lesson plans for your sessions.
- Supervise class participants to ensure a safe environment.
- Provide quality customer service to staff and members.
- Maintain a clean and inviting instructional area.
- Enforce all PEAC departmental policies and procedures.
- Attend mandatory meetings, workshops, and trainings.
- Maintain a working relationship with co-workers.
- Stay familiar with evacuation plans for your work area.
- Serve as a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment at Cal Poly with at least 6 units for undergraduates or 4 units for graduate students.
- Professional instructor certification in a related field or prior training.
- Extensive knowledge of the classes you teach and current trends in your area of expertise.
- Understanding of anatomy, physiology, muscular function, and exercise program implementation.
- Previous experience supervising participants in an instructional environment.
- Ability to learn new class formats, stay organized, and plan effectively.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- American Red Cross certification (or equivalent) in Adult First Aid, CPR, and AED, required within 30 days of hire.
- Commitment to student development and leadership.

- Location: Vallejo, California (Cal Poly Solano Campus).
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Term: Fall 2026.
- Hours: Maximum 20 hours per week, including potential early mornings, late nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Compensation: $18.00 to $32.00 per hour for instruction time and $16.90 per hour for meetings and training.
