About the role#
The Recreation Center Member Services Student Assistant serves as the primary point of contact for the Cal Poly Recreation Center. This role is responsible for maintaining a welcoming environment, managing front desk operations, and acting as an information hub for members. Staff in this position facilitate access, provide customer support, and ensure the efficient operation of both the front desk and the Pro Shop.
What you'll do#
- Manage front desk operations from open to close daily.
- Provide customer service and assist with fitness class check-ins.
- Sell memberships and day use access to the Recreation Center.
- Process sales transactions and handle cash for Pro Shop items.
- Maintain knowledge of all facility programs, activities, and registration processes.
- Anticipate participant needs and provide solutions or alternatives.
- Monitor, restock, and issue Pro Shop equipment and manage towel service.
- Update member records and assist with required waivers or registration forms.
- Support special events and communicate facility or schedule changes to participants.
- Collect data, prepare reports, and maintain an organized, secure workspace.
What you'll need#
- Must be a currently enrolled Cal Poly student carrying at least 6 units (4 units for graduate students).
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Experience with cash handling and accounting functions.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Previous clerical or customer service experience is preferred.
- Ability to work independently and effectively with minimal supervision.
- Strong attention to detail and critical thinking skills.
Location & details#
- Location: San Luis Obispo, California.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Availability: Requires a minimum of two consecutive terms of work. Shifts may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Employment Type: Paid, full-time student position.
