About the role#
The Food Service Student Assistant supports the Children's Center Food Program by preparing meals for children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years. This role involves working under the supervision of the Food Program Supervisor to ensure nutritious meals are provided according to Child and Adult Care Food Program guidelines. Employees are expected to maintain professional standards, communicate effectively, and support the university's learning objectives.
What you'll do#
- Prepare food from scratch following established menus and standardized preparation guidelines.
- Deliver meals to classrooms on time while ensuring food is served at the correct temperature.
- Perform routine cleaning, organization, and maintenance of food program equipment and service areas.
- Assist in recording meal components on production worksheets.
- Maintain sanitary conditions and ensure a safe environment for all participants.
- Attend mandatory meetings, workshops, and retreats.
- Act as a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a Cal Poly student (minimum of 6 units for undergraduates or 4 units for graduate students).
- Ability to follow written and verbal directions and work with minimal supervision.
- Strong attention to detail, time management, and record-keeping skills.
- Capability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must pass a fingerprint and criminal record clearance upon hiring.
- Must provide proof of good physical condition, including MMR and Pertussis immunizations and a negative tuberculosis (TB) test.
- Previous kitchen or cooking experience, food safety training, and coursework in food science or nutrition are preferred.

- Location: Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, California.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Pay: $16.90 per hour.
- Commitment: Minimum of two consecutive terms of work availability.
