About the role#
Cainhoy Veterinary Hospital offers a flexible externship program for students currently enrolled in a DVM curriculum. This program provides practical experience in a small animal practice setting. You will work alongside our veterinary team to gain hands-on experience and prepare for clinical practice after graduation. Externships typically last two to three weeks, though the program is flexible and can range from two to eight weeks to align with your college requirements. You will receive a stipend of $250 per week.
What you'll do#
Under the supervision of a mentor doctor, you will participate in all aspects of patient care. Your daily responsibilities include:
- Gathering patient histories.
- Performing physical examinations.
- Developing diagnostic and therapeutic plans.
- Scrubbing in to surgery.
- Assisting in the management of medical cases.
- Providing wellness care.
- Developing client communication skills.
- Polishing technical skills.
- Producing appropriate medical records, including SOAPs.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited DVM program.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Proof of professional liability insurance.
You are expected to maintain professional behavior and dress while following the standards of the practice. You should be familiar with the Veterinary Practice Act regarding the scope of duties permitted under supervision.
