About the role#
The Audubon Aquarium Rescue team focuses on stranding response and data collection for marine mammals and sea turtles in Louisiana. As a Stranding Intern, you will support the humane care and treatment of injured, ill, or displaced animals. This role provides insight into the health of the marine environment and the threats facing these species in the wild. This is a paid, full-time internship available for Winter and Summer 2027.
What you'll do#
- Assist with stranding response operations and beach surveys.
- Participate in marine mammal and sea turtle necropsies.
- Manage record keeping and data entry.
- Perform daily cleaning, vehicle maintenance, and animal husbandry tasks.
- Work 5 days per week, including some weekends, to account for the unpredictable nature of strandings.
What you'll need#
- Must be at least 18 years old and pass a background check.
- Up to date Tetanus vaccine.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Drive.
- Strong observation and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- A positive attitude and the ability to work through unpleasant situations or around strong odors.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and all safety protocols.
- Physical ability to walk or stand for extended periods, lift or carry heavy objects, and climb stairs and ladders.
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, humidity, and cold.
