About the role#
As a Robotics Systems Intern at the Astera Institute, you will build and compare systems that allow robots to move and adjust their working height. Under the guidance of an engineering mentor, you will prototype wheeled mobile bases and lifting platforms. You will run hands-on experiments to evaluate how different designs perform under realistic conditions. Your work helps the team select practical designs based on measured performance, reliability, and ease of integration.
What you'll do#
- Assemble and modify mobile bases using hoverboard hub motors and conventional motor-driven wheel assemblies.
- Design and fabricate chassis, mounts, and supporting components.
- Develop repeatable tests to evaluate maneuverability, traction, payload handling, power consumption, and steerability across different floor surfaces.
- Assemble, adapt, and test lifting mechanisms like scissor lifts and telescoping columns.
- Evaluate lifting performance including range, speed, positioning repeatability, and stability under load.
- Configure motor controllers, connect feedback sensors, and write simple control or data-collection scripts.
- Maintain CAD files, wiring diagrams, parts lists, and test records to document design comparisons.
- Organize components, maintain prototypes and test fixtures, and assist with equipment repairs.
What you'll need#
- Coursework or practical experience in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, robotics, or mechatronics.
- Experience building and troubleshooting a physical system through projects, research, or student teams.
- Familiarity with mechanical assembly, electrical wiring, motors, and sensors.
- Interest in hands-on prototyping and systematic testing.
- Comfort working with an engineering mentor and maintaining a shared lab space.
- Preferred: Experience with CAD, 3D printing, machining, or fabrication.
- Preferred: Knowledge of BLDC motors, encoders, linear actuators, or drivetrain design.
- Preferred: Proficiency in Python, C/C++, or microcontrollers.
Location & details#
- Location: Emeryville, California.
- Term: Rolling.
- Modality: On-site.
- Compensation: $40 per hour.
- Status: Full-time internship.
