About the role#
As a Mechanical Engineering Research Intern, you will participate in the design, construction, and testing of EUV lithography light sources and metrology systems. You will work on sub-systems involving robotics, mechatronics, precision mechanics, and opto-mechanics. This role involves translating functional requirements into technical specifications, developing concepts, and supporting system integration.
What you'll do#
- Develop and document mechanical designs for EUV test systems from concept through testing.
- Collaborate with project lead engineers to analyze and fabricate components and assemblies.
- Create detailed CAD drawings for manufacturing and define system specifications.
- Analyze and select materials while verifying design accuracy.
- Define test plans, execute testing, and write technical reports.
- Calculate mechanical tolerance stack ups, specifically regarding optical alignment.
- Perform FEA and other analytical evaluations to assess the mechanical and thermal stability of optical assemblies.
- Contribute to alignment and assembly processes for optical instruments.
- Coordinate with Optics and Systems engineers on sub-assembly designs.
- Partner with vendors to manage the fabrication of mechanical parts and mechanisms.
- Document mechanical engineering best practices.
What you'll need#
- Current pursuit of a Bachelor, Master, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering with at least 2 years of the degree program completed.
- Strong background in mechanical design, including kinematics, dynamics, material properties, and structural analysis.
- Experience with 3D solid modelling for design realization.
- Basic proficiency in mechanical analytical techniques, including first principle equations and Finite Element Analysis.
- Ability to derive conclusions from analysis and provide practical recommendations.
- Strong technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
- Capability to interface with multidisciplinary groups.
- Experience with mechatronics, precision design, or complex optical systems is preferred.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team with high attention to detail.
Location & details#
- Location: San Diego, California, USA.
- Term: Summer 2027.
