The Utility Engineering Cohort Intern program is a one-year, full-time, paid internship within the Arlington County Department of Environmental Services. This role supports the Water Sewer Streets Bureau in the maintenance and capital planning of critical infrastructure, including water mains, sanitary sewer mains, stormwater mains, and street assets. Interns work under the mentorship of senior staff to gain hands-on experience in a public-sector environment.
What you'll do#
- Support routine field inspections of water, sanitary sewer, and stormwater infrastructure, including valves, hydrants, manholes, and storm drains.
- Document field conditions through photographs, field notes, and asset management systems.
- Conduct engineering records research to verify and update data for water, sewer, and transportation assets.
- Utilize ArcGIS Pro, Microsoft Excel, Power BI, and asset management software to generate reports, analyze data, and visualize maintenance issues.
- Prepare as-built documentation and update engineering record drawings using Adobe software.
- Assist in tracking SCADA system data to identify unusual operating conditions.
- Organize project files, maps, and documentation to support operations and maintenance activities.
What you'll need#
- Recent college graduates (2025 or 2026) or currently enrolled Master’s degree students in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Statistics, Economics, or a related discipline.
- Less than one year of professional-level work experience in the internship field.
- A preference for a G.P.A. of 3.0 or above.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs is preferred, along with familiarity with GIS software, asset management software, and Adobe software.
- Must possess or obtain a valid driver’s license or have the ability to use alternative transportation to reach various worksites.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment background check, including criminal, driving, education, professional licensure, and credit history records.
Location & details#
- Location: Arlington, Virginia.
- Work Modality: On-site. Core work hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
- Term: This is a one-year program beginning in September 2026.
- Benefits: Interns are eligible for County government employee benefits, including health, dental, and leave.
