The Department of Environmental Services (DES) Administrative Services group is seeking a Human Resources & Organizational Development Intern for a one-year, full-time, paid internship. This role is designed for graduate-level students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in HR operations, recruiting, and process improvement while supporting a department of nearly 800 employees.
What you'll do#
- Support HR operations through project-based initiatives, process improvements, and the maintenance of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for onboarding, offboarding, and hoteling.
- Facilitate Day One orientation sessions for new hires, including presenting information and serving as a resource for onboarding questions.
- Manage HR content and systems, including maintaining the HR SharePoint site and organizing departmental resources.
- Coordinate employee lifecycle activities such as developing job descriptions, managing job postings, and assisting with recruitment communications and offer materials.
- Support Learning and Development initiatives by researching training resources, preparing materials, and assisting with training sessions.
- Handle administrative tasks including processing merit award nominations, coordinating Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, and responding to general inquiries.
What you'll need#
- Recent graduates (2025 or 2026) with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, or current graduate students in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Candidates must have less than one year of professional-level work experience in the internship field.
- Strong organizational, written communication, and customer service skills.
- Desirable experience includes drafting process documentation or SOPs, supporting recruiting or onboarding activities, and working with SharePoint, HRIS systems, or collaborative document tools.
- Preference may be given to applicants with a G.P.A. of 3.0 or above.
- A pre-employment background check including criminal, driving, education, and credit history is required.
Location & details#
- This is an on-site, full-time position (40 hours per week) located at the Bozman Government Center in Arlington, Virginia.
- The internship follows a hybrid work policy requiring at least 24 hours in the office every two weeks.
- The program is scheduled to begin in September 2026.
